Brooding

Feeding

Start feeding layer feeds at about 18 to 20 weeks of age or when the first egg is laid, regardless of what happens first. Layer feeds are formulated for egg laying chickens.

Around 16 percent protein and extra calcium (3 to 4 percent) are found in layer feeds, so chickens lay eggs with solid shells and do not deplete their body's calcium. "Breeder feeds" are often available. For chickens that produce eggs for hatching, these feeds are for-mulated.

Breeder feeds are essentially layer feeds containing slightly more protein and are fortified for proper chick growth and hatching with extra vitamins. For a small-flock producer, the importance of breeder feed is somewhat doubtful, because the additional expense might not be justified by the potential for a marginal improvement in hatchability. Layer feeds for breeder chickens would be sufficient.
